Enhancing Education Through Technology
Enhancing Education Through Technology is an effort in the Groton CSD to create a cluster of student centered active learning environment classrooms energized through rich professional development, an infusion of technology, and use of effective models and promising practices to promote learning.
We will:
  • Support Student-Centered Active Learning Environment Classrooms (SCALE- see Target Learning Environment)
  • Improve student literacy skills, especially for students with disabilities
Means:
  • Professional development that is rich and robust: defined, adaptable and sustained, both face-to-face and online
  • High ratio computer/ student learning environment in elementary classes

Support and time to plan and refine a unit, and to offer and receive support and feedback from colleagues.
Each teacher will develop a project for students that is connected to a unit of study you are embarking on over the next two months.
The project will be designed to offer:
  • high student engagement,
  • student collaboration,
  • computer enhanced elements, and

Our JANUARY GCS Newsletter Submission regarding learning with technology

11/2/2010
Dear EETT Folk,

I have been enjoying work here in Groton, especially when I have been in your classrooms, interacting with kids, and seeing the great things going on. Sometimes good connections happen when someone asks a question or we start to explore together.
· Gail asked about word prediction software and we discovered Google Scribe, a free tool that guesses what the user starts to type. http://scribe.googlelabs.com/
· Dick and Julie and I were exploring grammar supports and found:
http://www.ego4u.com/
· Students, even in the kindergartens, seem to be facile with using the trackpads on the netbooks and are learning quickly how to get around.
· Some great uses of Voicethread are occurring-- student’s sharing books they have written in Rebecca’s room, Julie and Dick’s students’ landform work, Gail’s class working in centers using Voicethread for note taking, Nancy and Theresa’s kids bat observations, and much more.

I posted a new prompt on the blog at:
http://grotongrows.blogspot.com/ :
During the next week, focus on observing one student using technology as they work and learn.
What did you observe? (engagement, giving them access to information, ability to learn new skills or practice old ones, etc.)
What are the next steps for that student? For you?

I have quite a bit of space on my calendar, so please sign up for some time. I can meet to brainstorm, plan, we can co-teach, or I can coach your kids through a lesson. Access Linda and my calendar through the link on the side at:

Please feel free to email me with any ideas, questions, thoughts, frustrations or inspirations.
